Is Your Interior Design Feeling Dated? Here's Why
If you're feeling ho-hum about your interior design lately, you may be thinking it's time for a complete refresh—a bold move that will give your home a more modern, on-trend look and feel.
Before you go all-in on an overhaul, however, you may want to consider a few specific issues that may be at the root of your home's dated-feeling design. According to the Redesign blog by Hometalk, correcting one of these three problems can instantly update the style of any room in the house. Consider if any of the following are at play in your home:
1. It's too warm or too cool.
If you've swung too far in one direction—either entirely warm tones and textures or a completely cool palette—your home may feel bland and a bit passe. Designers say that the key to keeping your interior design vibrant and modern, is to maintain a balance of warm and cool tones within any given room. For example, if you're leaning too heavily into cool hues like white or gray, add wooden or rustic metal accents and a few textured, warm-toned textiles for a more blended landscape. A patterned rug that blends warm and cool tones is a great way to add balance in either direction as well.
2. It's too trendy.
While it's natural to want to incorporate some of the latest trends into your home design, keep in mind that trends are by nature short lived. So while it's ok to dabble in the latest trend, don't go overboard. That way, when the trend fades, you can change up your interior design quickly and affordably. Otherwise, living with a design that's steeped in a passe trend will surely make your home feel dated.
3. It's too one-sided.
Most interior design schemes show a preference for a particular style, whether it's mid-century modern or coastal grandmother. Go ahead and indulge your design preference but don't overdo it. Be sure to include a touch of complementary design themes, such as an antique lamp in a contemporary room or sleek metals in a farmhouse interior. By mixing up your interior design in this way, you're more apt to keep your home's style fresh and inviting.
